It’s Important to Invest in High Quality Tools
There is a lot to see in Alaska. Much of it is far away. Be glad some of it is far away. The grizzly bear on the distant hill. A good pair of binoculars will bring you closer but keep you safe.
A friend handed me a pair of small compact binoculars a few years ago. It ruined me. The sharp clear image was so stunning that I promised myself to research that brand. Swarovski.
It has been a great investment. My husband and I are impressed with Swarovski. We tried out a lot of different lens. We purchased 10×50 and have been very happy with them.
It’s fascinating to study the landscape and be able to zoom in and understand the terrain better. It helps me understand the color variations. It was a delight to watch the beaver on the river bank go between the woods and his little home. We saw moose hunters march off to set up camp. We also saw the bull moose that came out to a field to feed out of sight of their camp. It appeared that the moose was taunting them while they went off in the opposite direction to hunt. We watch eagles soaring, the goshawk flying overhead and the swans migrating north up the river valley with these lens. We can spot the numbers and color of the distant bush plane as it flies toward the mountains. We would miss a lot if we didn’t have these lens. We keep them handy.
We have found the 10×50 to be excellent for gathering light in low light conditions. Dusk is the best time for viewing animals and we need binoculars that have a wide field of view.
Research the different kinds available and find what works best for you. But don’t invest in an inferior brand. The initial savings won’t be beneficial in the long run. I agree with you. Arches paper is terrific. I like to use it and I also like Fabriano paper for watercolor. I haven’t used the 300 lb in a long time. Your comment makes me want to try it again. Thanks!
I agree that high quality tools can make all the difference. In watercolour for example I enjoy a much richer and satisfying experience when I paint on high quality paper. My absolute favourite paper is Arches cold pressed. For the longest time I used 140lb which was much nicer than the 90lb student papers I started with. Lately I started using 300lb paper as I am painting larger landscapes, and I LOVE it. The paper makes a world of difference.
